What is addiction?

Many people see addiction in different ways, I see it as: ‘participating in a behaviour that has a negative effect, despite knowing this. This can be physical addictions such as substance misuse (drugs/alcohol), technological or even caffeine/sugar, all the way to mental addictions such as negative thinking and self-doubt, the list goes on.

All behaviour has a positive intention, and an addiction tends to be a coping mechanism, to keep you safe. Often, the coping mechanism is used to suppress unresolved trauma, no matter how big or small. This doesn’t have to be a life-changing traumatic event, it can even be other negative emotions such as stress, anxiety and so on. Once this learned coping mechanism is used, it then becomes an addictive behaviour which is very difficult to break.

My Story

I also had many addictive behaviours that I used as a coping mechanism, and it took me many years and hours of therapy to realise this. I was using alcohol, cocaine, ketamine, MDMA, cannabis, technology and toxic relationship dynamics as an escape.

These addictive behaviours actually made things worse. Imagine putting a plaster over a volcano. It was a temporary fix, but soon I was about to erupt.

Every morning, I promised myself it would be different, but by night, I was back in the same destructive loop. After many sleepless and lonely nights, with sickening thoughts running through my mind, I was in a very bad place. I would cry myself to sleep hoping there would be a way out.

And there was. However, I was unaware at the time and told myself I could stop whenever. After hundreds of failed attempts, I decided enough was enough and sought professional help.

The Cure

After hundreds of hours of study, research and learning from experts in the field, I have come up with a simple 3-step solution to break the cycle, The Life Rebuild System
